Service Learning, Mauritania

This is an article about the Executive Director of the QMED project, Mr. Mohammed Nasser Al Kaabi.

If you aren’t sure exactly where the country of Mauritania is, you aren’t alone. This Islamic state on the West coast of Africa has a complex history and culture which once discovered, more than make up for its relative anonymity, and long journey to get to the capital, Nouakchott.

When looking for Arab related service learning project sites (service learning is a more intense form of volunteering), Mauritania presented itself as a perfect option because of the rich Arab culture there as well as the State of Qatar’s social development program, the Qatar Mauritania Establishment for Social Development (QMED). This amazing enterprise, designed as vocational training centers, literacy for young kids, and world class health care was started by His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and furthered by his wife, Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al Misned.

For the QU students who have been traveling to Mauritania for the past two years, its exposure to what NGOs can do to help people sustain themselves and also find common ground far away from home.
